Error occurred in deployment step – moving a workflow project to a new SharePoint 2010 machine

If you get your first SharePoint 2010 workflow project from someone else, chances are you don’t have a Workflow History list on your SharePoint machine. This will result in this error message when you try to deploy the workflow from wIThin Visual Studio 2010.

<a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/blogfiles/pandrew/WindowsLiveWrITer/Erroroccurredindeploymentstepmovingawork_B56E/clip_image002_2.jpg”><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" tITle=”clip_image002″ border=”0″ alt=”clip_image002″ src=”http://blogs.msdn.com/blogfiles/pandrew/WindowsLiveWrITer/Erroroccurredindeploymentstepmovingawork_B56E/clip_image002_thumb.jpg” width=”627″ height=”126″ />

Error occurred in deployment step ‘Activate Features’: Failed to create workflow association ‘WorkflowProject1 – Workflow1’. Cannot find SharePoint list wITh name “Workflow History” or GUID “4eac61bf-6b3b-4f7d-b73c-f073ccc4364d”.

The easiest way to resolve this error is to start a new instance of Visual Studio 2010. Create a new SharePoint 2010 Workflow project and step through the wizard. During the create project wizard IT will create the Workflow History list and you can then deploy the project you got from someone else.

Getting Custom Workflow Activities into SharePoint Designer 2010

Developing a custom workflow activITy for SharePoint 2010 doesn’t differ that much
from developing one for the MOSS 2007 platform. So by following the different articles
on that you will be able to create one wITh ease.

SharePoint 2010 still uses the same mechanism wITh an .ACTIONS file and adding an
“authorizedType” element to your web.config. I was unsuccessful however in getting
the activITy to show up in SharePoint Designer 2010.

After adding a “SafeControl” entry to the web.config the activITy did show up. As
far as I can see this is the only thing different to the steps you have to take in
MOSS 2007.

Language Workflow in Office 2010: Reading, Authoring & Interacting in a Foreign Language

In the wake of our coverage of last month's SharePoint Conference sessions, this is the twelfth in a series of posts documenting the keynotes and sessions I attended at the Microsoft "Airlift" event for Office 2010.  This four-day event took place in Seattle during the first week of June, was open to participants in Microsoft's Technical Adoption Program (TAP), and in essence took the form of a mini-SharePoint Conference.

Jesus Barrera Ramos and Tomasz Tomko presented the session on Reading, Authoring and Interacting in a Foreign Language in 2010 and, while I was unfortunately unable to attend the entire session, what I saw was very impressive indeed.

Thankfully, the portion I was able to attend included the SharePoint demo with which Tomasz concluded the session but, prior to that demo, I learned that translations can be done in-place in both Outlook mail and Word and are easily accessible via a contextual drop down in 2010.  The Office Translation Service impressively offers word-by-word translations and/or translation of entire documents, as desired.  It was noted that PowerPoint and OneNote have a "mini-translator" that's not present in Publisher or Visio (which only have a text selection feature).

Tomasz Tomko's demo of the international offerings in SharePoint 2010 was quite slick.  In 2010, end users may elect to change the default language of a SharePoint site through the Multilingual User Interface.  Changing the default language of messaging across a SharePoint site is not just for end users though, and can also be applied across the board, up to and including Central Admin.  Note:  Changing the language will globally alter the language of default / instructional messages across a SharePoint site, but will not affect user content such as list item data, documents, and the like.

The ability to change the language was demonstrated as residing in Site Actions -> Settings -> Language Settings (under the Site Administration heading).  Options include Default Language, Alternate Language, and Overwrite Translations.  Quickly reverting the language back to the default can also be done via a drop down from your user name, and was also demonstrated.
